Former world number one Tracy Austin has picked Spain’s
young tennis sensation
Carlos Alcaraz as the favourite to win the
US Open 2024. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the year is set to begin on August 26, and players from all over the world will compete to showcase their talent
and secure the ultimate prize.
Austin, a former world number one, was quoted in a
report by Tennis.com, where she picked Alcaraz as the favourite for the upcoming
US Open. “I love watching him play,” she said when asked about the
favourite for the upcoming mega-event. “He hits a shot and he’s like ‘Woah,’
and the fans are like ‘Woah,’ and he’s like ‘Wow, I hit that’. He’s so
exciting.”
Alcaraz is going through a fabulous season, and he has
already won two Grand Slams. His first major title triumph was at the French
Open after beating Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the final in a five-set
thriller with a score of 6–3, 2–6, 5–7, 6–1, 6–2. He then went on to win the
Wimbledon title after beating Serbia’s legendary tennis star Novak Djokovic in
straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2, 7-6.
Alcaraz’s impressive show continued during the Paris Olympics, where he won the silver medal. He lost in the final of the gold
medal clash to Djokovic in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 7-6. Alcaraz’s
most recent appearance was during the Cincinnati Open, where he suffered a
surprising defeat to France’s Gael Monfils with a score of 4-6, 7-6, 6-4. Alcaraz
had a good outing in the US Open last year, but his journey ended as he lost in
the semifinal to Russia’s Daniil Medvedev with a score of 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
Alcaraz also lifted the title back in 2022, when he defeated Norway’s Casper
in the final.
