Despite a brilliant performance in his loss to
Carlos Alcaraz,
Ben Shelton has contributed to a discouraging statistic involving American players against World No.1's.
Shelton, who came into the limelight after his spectacular win over former World No.2 Casper Ruud one year ago, was unable to replicate his performance as he fell to World No.1 Alcaraz in the second round at the
Canadian Open (National Bank Open) in Toronto on Wednesday.
Shelton's loss increases losing streak of American male players against World No.1's
Following his straight sets loss to the Spaniard, Shelton became the latest victim in US men being unable to topple a World No.1. As per data published by OptaAce, Americans have now lost 25 consecutive matches against players holding the top spot. Earlier this year, Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz were similarly dismissed by Alcaraz in Miami, when he was ranked No. 1.
A similar streak of 25 losses previously occurred when 20-times Grand Slam champion and the then-World No. 1 Roger Federer defeated former World No. 4 James Blake in the final of the 2006 ATP Finals.
