Rankings in any sport hold significant importance and it is
no different in tennis.
Wimbledon 2023 is set to begin on Monday where players from
all over the world will be in the running to lift the title.
Ahead of the tournament, player seedings, which are now directly
linked with player rankings, remain a big talking point and this time it was pretty similar.
However, one thing that remains different compared to the last
few years was that the majority of the sports followers did not agree with the
players seeding in the men’s singles category.
As per the seedings, Spain’s
Carlos Alcaraz will be the top seed, ahead of the seven-time Wimbledon champion
Novak Djokovic.
One of the primary reasons for that was that the Serbian tennis star did not
receive the mandatory 2000 rating points he was due to receive after winning Wimbledon
last year as players from Russia and Belarus were banned from taking part in the
competition.
That discussion, both on and off social media, is likely
to increase further after the recently announced Universal Tennis Ratings (UTR)
where the 36-year-old is leading the charts. He is followed by Alcaraz in the
second spot and Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the third spot.
Djokovic has a fabulous record while playing at Wimbledon
where he has won the title seven times. He is the reigning champion since 2018
and is on a 28-match winning streak in the competition.
His last defeat in the mega-event was in the quarterfinals
stage in 2017 when he was forced to retire against Tomas Berdych due to an arm
injury.
On the other hand, Alcaraz’s best performance at Wimbledon
came in the 2022 edition where he was knocked out of the competition in the
fourth round after suffering a defeat to Italy’s Jannik Sinner with a score of
6-1, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3.
