Spain’s young tennis star
Carlos Alcaraz was lucky to avoid a
fine after a code violation during the Omnium Banque National
Canadian Open in
Montreal.
The 20-year-old, who is now the talk of the town after winning
his maiden Wimbledon title following his memorable five-set win over current
world number two Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in London last month, had a
frustrating day in Montreal on Friday.
The current world number one threw the racquet in frustration
during the quarterfinal of the event, something which could’ve led to a penalty
from the authorities.
The frustration was visible as the current top-ranked player
was knocked out of the competition after losing to America’s
Tommy Paul with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
The defeat was a serious blow for Alcaraz in his preparation
for the fourth Grand Slam of the year — US Open — which is set to begin in less
than 20 days.
Alcaraz will be defending his title in New York this year which
he won in 2022 after beating Norway’s Casper Ruud in the final with a score of 6–4,
2–6, 7–6(7–1), 6–3.
