Matteo Berrettini left the court in tears today after his loss to Lorenzo Sonego in Stuttgart This was his first match back in 2 months The crowd applauded him as he left the court & tried to lift his spirits in whatever way they could ❤️🩹
Matteo Berretitni finally made a return to the tennis court at the Stuttgart Open where he faced compatriot Lorenzo Sonego but ultimately he left the court in tears.
Berrettini has been dealing with a lot of injury problems this year which have kept him from playing much tennis this year and it's impacted his confidence a lot. If you add some problems in his private life and the constant media barrage he endured due to his new relationship the Italian certainly saw better days.
The return in Stuttgart was a good chance for him to get back to winning ways as it came at an event where he shined last year ending up as the champion after beating Andy Murray in the final but it didn't go that way. Compatriot Lorenzo Sonego proved much better beating him comfortably in two sets.
It seems like the whole situation impacted Berrettini heavily who was spotted leaving the court in tears following the embarrassing loss. It was a sad scene to see especially since this has been a horror year for him. The match itself was only his first in two months and it's clear that he's not really enjoying life on Tour right now. It's a shame because the grass season is one of the best parts of the year for him.
He was a Wimbledon finalist once playing against Djokovic and many always thought that he had what it takes to become a Wimbledon champion one day. It's certainly a dream for him but it doesn't seem likely that that dream will be coming true this year. Check out the heart-breaking scenes below but there is no doubt that Berrettini will bounce back eventually.
Next week's Queen's Club could be the perfect chance to do s as he won the event for two consecutive years.
