Francisco Cerundolo will take the headlines at the
Miami Open after knocking out
Daniil Medvedev in a huge upset result, winning 6-0, 4-6, 7-5. However, a very unusual and bizarre moment occurred when the spider cam got stuck on the
umpire's chair, almost causing a huge accident.
It occurred deep in the third set with the scores level at 3-3. Medvedev had struggled in the early periods of the match, losing the first eight games as Cerundolo threatened a routing. The Indian Wells finalist picked himself up and fought his way back into the match, winning the second set 6-4 before staying on-par with his Argentine opponent as they both looked to book their spots in the last-16 of the
Miami Open.
However, disaster almost struck as the spider cam, used to offer a bird's-eye view of the court and surrounding area, got caught on the umpire's chair. Mohamed Lahyani could have been a passenger if not wary of the scenes occurring. The ball kids hurriedly kept the chair stable as the Swede clambered down to safety.
Play was paused while the situation was fixed, with the players coming over to see what was occurring. In the end, everyone was ok and the match was resumed.
Cerundolo left it late to snatch the break, which was coincidentally match point. It was a huge win for the 18th seed who progresses in the tournament, set to contest for a quarterfinal place against Ugo Humbert, who got the better of Alexander Shevchenko just beforehand.
For Medvedev, it is a very frustrating result. He previously won the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and lost in the final of Indian Wells in a competitive match against Jannik Sinner. He is the latest top 10 player to depart, closely following Felix Auger-Alaissime who failed to find a way past Terence Atmane in three sets.
A huge opportunity has now arisen for the players in the ATP draw to conjure up a deep run. Taylor Fritz is the only top 10 player to have booked his spot in the last-16 with Sinner and Alexander Zverev looking to do just that later on.
