Hubi confirming the transfer (over 88k euros) is done 🤣
Sponsored by Millennium, a Portuguese bank, the Estoril Open tried a novel way in order to send Hubert Hurkacz his winnings of £75k on the court after he defeated Pedro Martinez in the final on Sunday.
Hurkacz saw off Pablo Llamas Ruiz and Cristian Garin in the latter stages to take on Martinez who had taken down Casper Ruud. But it was a straight sets win for the Pole who completes his set of winning on every surface.
Then the moment came as instead of employing a huge cheque like other tournaments to show prize money or in a lot of cases no cheque at all, a huge giant talent was wheeled onto the court. The sponsors showed them transferring the money and Hurkacz had to confirm that the transfer was done.
In this case, they will have to hope they have the right details. Tennis fans joked on social media that it was akin to the tablet used to order McDonalds on. Another said it was awkward and undignified. "First time I see this type of thing, hope it’s the last time." one wrote. Well it will be at least for the Estoril Open which currently has no space on the calendar for 2025 and it's future remains uncertain so the giant tablet could be a one and done.
