Alcaraz rolls his ankle in practice. Three days before his start at the US Open. Terrible to see.
Carlos Alcaraz is in a US Open crisis days before the tournament begins on Monday August 26 with the Roland Garros and Wimbledon champion rolling his ankle during practice.
Alcaraz was practicing against Francisco Cerundolo but had to stop immediately, he spoke with his team and left likely to assess his next move. The video below shows the moment in which he rolled his ankle.
It is not the tonic that Alcaraz needs ahead of the US Open after a pretty disheartening few weeks. He lost in the gold medal match at the Olympic Games and sobbed afterwards against Novak Djokovic. He then returned in Cincinnati after a high in the form of a holiday with friends to find it all come crashing down.
He lost to Gael Monfils in a loss that he described as the worst of his career. He also showed a petulant side never seen where he smashed his racquet on the court and now heads into the US Open with injury to contend with.
The third seed faces Li Tu on Tuesday (technically Wednesday UK time) on Arthur Ashe Stadium. But now aside from if it was a false alarm, it will be a race against time for fitness. Not the outcome he wanted ahead of the final Grand Slam of the year.
He is not the only player to suffer with pre tournament issues also with Novak Djokovic not practicing with Holger Rune yesterday due to discomfort. He was falsely reported to cancel his Wawrinka practice today but has since been seen on Arthur Ashe this evening. But with Sinner also dealing with the doping scandal and his own hip issues, it is not a US Open men's draw full of promise as of right now. All eyes are now on Alcaraz to see the extent of what has gone on.
