Polish tennis star
Hubert Hurkacz may not be known for his defensive prowess, but the former World No.8 put on an impressive scrambling display during his opening round match at the 2024
Halle Open.
Hurkacz faced off against Italian
Flavio Cobolli on Monday, and was required to work hard for his 7-5 7-6(2) victory. Although Hurkacz employed his traditional big serves and groundstrokes, it was his defense that saw him prevail during some critical points.
Strategic defense leads to offense
Following a well-placed Cobolli first serve, Hurkacz was forced into a defensive position after getting the return back in play. However, his Italian Opponent quickly hit a forehand approach shot across the court and raced to the net for a supposedly easy volley.
Hurkacz made an impressive scramble to keep the ball in play, sending back a deep lob which Cobolli prepared to put away. However, he was unable to do so due to Hurkacz's defense, as the fifth seed hit a backhand groundstroke that forced Cobolli to retreat back into the court. This was enough for Hurkacz to hit a penetrating forehand cross court, before coming to the net and winning the point with an exceptionally placed low volley.
