Nicolas Jarry helped a young spectator during his victory against Stefanos Tsitsipas at the China Open in Beijing.
The Chilean tennis player had a great start to the Asian tour by defeating the 4th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round. Jarry, ranked World No. 23, was leading the match 6-4, 4-2 when he noticed that a young spectator, who was with her father, fell ill. Without hesitation, Jarry approached her and offered a bottle of water during a break in the game before receiving Tsitsipas' service.
Jarry's gesture was warmly applauded by the local crowd and later shared on social media, highlighting his genuine care for children and his sportsmanship:
"Wholsome content @NicoJarry helps out a young spectator who has fallen ill #ChinaOpen"
Jarry, who is currently at the highest ranking of his career, had previously shown acts of kindness towards children. In fact, during Wimbledon, after being defeated in the third round by Carlos Alcaraz, the World No. 23 gave away his tennis rackets to some children in the audience.
In Beijing this time, Nicolas Jarry faced Stefanos Tsitsipas for the fourth time this year and the fifth time in his career. Jarry claimed victory this year in Halle Open and now in China, while the Greek defeated him in Monte-Carlo and Los Cabos.
Their previous encounter was in the 2019 Libema Open, where the Chilean emerged victorious, leaving their head-to-head record at 3-2 in Jarry's favor.
Jarry will now compete in the round of 16 against the 22-year-old Matteo Arnaldi, another surprise of the season currently ranked World No. 48. Arnaldi, who came through the qualifying rounds, faced J.J. Wolf in the first round, also a qualifier, and comfortably secured a 6-2, 6-2 victory
Although they have never faced each other on the ATP Tour, both players were on opposing sides just two weeks ago in the Davis Cup when Chile and Italy met. Nicolas Jarry played as the first singles player for Chile and lost to Lorenzo Sonego, while Matteo Arnaldi played in the second singles match against Cristian Garin and also secured victory.
The series ended 3-0 in favor of the Italians, earning them a spot in the final phase and eliminating the South American team.
