Britain’s tennis star
Andy Murray burst into tears after
securing a win in the
Davis Cup.
The 36-year-old defeated Switzerland’s Leandro Riedi with a score
of 6-7 (7) 6-4 6-4 in a contest that lasted more than three hours on Friday.
After the win, Murray was extremely emotional as he dedicated
the triumph to his late grandmother.
"Today is a tough day for me, it's my gran's funeral
today," he said. "I'm sorry to my family that I'm not able to be
there but gran, this one's for you. I spoke to my dad about it and he said that
she'd want you to play. He just said make sure you win, so I did."
Despite it being an emotional day, Murray would have been
pleased with the result as he was coming on the back of a disappointed US Open campaign.
The former world number one was knocked out from the fourth
and final Grand Slam of the year after suffering a defeat to Bulgaria’s Grigor
Dimitrov in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 6-1.
Murray has an impressive record at the highest level but has
struggled with fitness concerns for a long period of time.
It was because of this reason he announced retirement from
the sport in early 2019 but made a stunning comeback.
