Rennae
Stubbs discussed the pressure
Coco Gauff faced and compared her to Serena
Williams.
The former
Australian tennis player talked about Coco Gauff on her podcast, The Rennae
Stubbs Tennis Podcast. The 19-year-old American secured her first Grand Slam
title with a dominant victory over Aryna Sabalenka in the US Open final by 2-6,
6-3, 6-2.
Gauff had a
strong performance in the hardcourt swing, making her one of the favorites
after winning her first WTA 500 title in Washington and her first WTA 1000
title in Cincinnati. Stubbs discussed Gauff's situation and drew comparisons
between her and Serena Williams.
"She was
under so much pressure from the very beginning of this tournament, very much
like Serena, in a little bit different ways everybody thinks Serena was
supposed to win everything," Stubbs said in her podcast.
"But
the fact that Coco had for the first time real pressure on her shoulders to
actually came out and won the tournament."
"She had
some whoopsie-daisies every now and again in the matches but that's going to
happen, that's just technique wise she's going to have those moments. The fact
that I think Brad has helped her win ugly in some respects by getting a
forehand into court and using her speed and her backhand is so good,"
Rennae Stubbs added.
Gauff left
the US Open as the new world No. 3, trailing only Iga Swiatek and Aryna
Sabalenka, and she will be out of competition for a few weeks. The American
decided to skip the WTA 1000 Guadalajara Open and will only return to the
courts in October at the WTA 1000 Beijing Open.
Additionally,
the American secured her spot in the WTA Finals for the second consecutive
season, which will take place in Cancún starting on October 29th to conclude
the season.
