Sofia Kenin
had a lighthearted moment at the
San Diego Open when she realized she had been
scouting the wrong opponent.
Sofia
Kenin, the North American player, has had an outstanding week at the San Diego
Open, reaching the semifinals of the tournament. On her way to the final four,
she defeated Veronika Kudermetova (6-4, 6-4), Kate Volynets (1-6, 6-4, 6-2),
and Anastasia Potapova (6-2, 6-3).
The former
Australian Open champion will face Emma Navarro for the first time in her
career for the semifinals, while in the second semifinal,
Danielle Collins will
take on Barbora Krejcikova. However, Kenin had a moment of confusion when she
thought she would be facing her compatriot Collins, something she only realized
in front of the press.
"Oh...
[surprised] I thought it was Collins. Oh my God, really? Why was I watching
Collins? Oh my God," she said.
"Thank
you. That feels better. That feels great!" she laughed.
Since her
incredible 2020 season, when she won the Australian Open and reached the final
at Roland Garros, Kenin has struggled to replicate the same level of success
that propelled her to the forefront of the tennis world.
The
24-year-old tennis player even dropped out of the top 400 rankings at one point
in 2022 and faced disruptions due to injuries.
This week,
the North American player finds herself in the semifinals for the second time
in the last three years, although her previous appearance was at the 2023
Hobart Open (WTA 250), whereas this time it's a WTA 500-level tournament.
A strong
performance at Wimbledon two months ago allowed her to re-enter the top 100,
and the significant number of points she has already secured this week will
propel her back into the top 65, her highest ranking since January 2022. If she
were to advance to the final, she would be on the brink of re-entering the top
50.
