Novak Djokovic was superb as he took down Jiri Lehecka to reach the Quarter-Finals of the 2025 Australian Open where he will face Carlos Alcaraz. But the 24-time Grand Slam champion didn't feel like being interviewed afterwards.
Djokovic reportedly was annoyed with certain sections of the crowd during the match and as a result decided against it. He gave a quick statement, signed some autographs and was booed by members of the crowd when he left.
He was then seen backstage in a heated discussion with tournament director Craig Tiley. But it wasn't a blanket ban on speaking as he did in fact chat to Eurosport afterwards being interviewed by Barbara Schett backstage.
He now faces off against Carlos Alcaraz in what will be a mouthwatering clash but it was an interesting decision to say the least to snub the interview.
“We all try to handle it in our own specific way. Sometimes I do it better and sometimes I kind of work against myself. Only people who have been there at the highest level know what you need to deal with. You need to weather the storm when you feel challenged. When I faced adversity the last few matches, I think I have handled it well. It’s a good signal for the next one," said Djokovic on Eurosport about the crowd.
While Jim Courier also said that there is no obligation for such an interview. “Maybe we’ll learn more about it in the press conference afterwards but he just didn’t feel like having a chat. I had no idea that was going to happen but there is no obligation for these players to do that," said Courier as per Eurosport. "It’s an opportunity for them to talk to people in the stadium and the fans around the world. But a player can opt out.“
