America’s tennis
Frances Tiafoe is eyeing an ‘epic’ encounter
against fellow countryman
Taylor Fritz in the semifinal of the
US Open. The
fourth and final Grand Slam of the year is moving toward a conclusion where
remaining players are giving their all to secure the ultimate prize.
In the men’s singles semifinal, there will be an all-American
contest between Tiafoe and Fritz. The 26-year-old cemented his place in the
last-four after being awarded a walkover in the quarterfinal against Bulgaria’s
Grigor Dimitrov. The score at the end of the match was 6-3, 6-7. On the other hand,
Fritz defeated world number four Germany’s Alexander Zverev with a score of
7-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6.
The contest means that for the first time in 18 years, there
will be an American playing in the final of the US Open. The last player to do
that was former world number one Andy Roddick who ended up losing to
Switzerland’s legendary tennis star Roger Federer. Tiafoe, talking after his
triumph in the quarterfinal, spoke about the contest ahead, which he believes is
going to be an ‘epic’ one and asked the fans to grab ‘popcorn’ and enjoy the two
Americans giving their all to secure the place in the final of the fourth and
final Grand Slam of the year.
"As personalities you can't meet two more
extreme," he said. "He's video game, never leave the room, goofball.
I'm loud, obnoxious at times. But he's also very funny. He's got that dry
humour, smart ass, but at the same time that's why we like each other because
we're so different, and that's why we get along so well. Then as competitors,
we're very alike, hate to lose. We battle hard, but personalities, we're very
different. It's funny to see our relationship how we've gotten older It's going to be epic. Popcorn, do what you
got to do. It's going to be a fun one on Friday."
