Daniil Medvedev says he knows what he wants to do when he wins his second Grand Slam - a celebration he was close to unveiling a couple of times. Any guesses on what it is? 🤔
Russia’s tennis star Daniil Medvedev might become the biggest beneficiary of Alexander Zverev’s recent defeat in the US Open. The German tennis star, who is currently ranked fourth in the ATP men’s singles rankings, suffered a defeat in the quarterfinal of the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year with a score of 7-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6.
With that result, the biggest beneficiary could be Russia’s Medvedev. The 28-year-old can now jump to as high as second in the rankings if he goes on to win the US Open 2024. Medvedev is currently placed fifth in the men’s rankings. If he goes on to win the title, his rating points tally will be 7,075, slightly better than Zverev, who is set to become the world number two at the end of the competition with 7,035 rating points.
Medvedev cemented his spot in the competition's quarterfinal after beating Portugal’s Nuno Borges in straight sets with a score of 6-0, 6-1, 6-3. With that win, he is now set to face the current world number Italy’s Jannik Sinner in a mouthwatering last-eight clash. The 23-year-old, who is already regarded as one of the best players currently playing in men’s tennis, cemented his place in the quarterfinal after beating America’s Tommy Paul in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 7-6, 6-1.
It will be the 13th meeting between the two in professional tennis. In the previous 12 meetings, Medvedev had a slight edge with seven wins and suffered five defeats in the process. Their most recent meeting came at Wimbledon in the quarterfinals stage, where the Russian tennis star came out on top in a five-set thriller with a score of 6-7(7), 6-4, 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-3. However, interestingly, on the hard court, Sinner has a better record compared to Medvedev, as in four meetings, he came out three times and suffered just a solitary defeat.
