Joao Fonseca couldn’t stop smiling after lifting the biggest trophy of his young career in Basel. The 19-year-old Brazilian defeated Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 6-4 in the Swiss Indoors final to claim his first ATP 500 title — and, as he revealed in his post-match speech, his next move will be a haircut. “We made a promise that if we won one of these tournaments, I’d shave my head,” Fonseca said with a laugh.
While his light-hearted comment drew laughter from the crowd, the moment also reflected the team spirit that has driven Fonseca’s rapid rise. The teenager praised his coaches Gui, Emanuel, and Egidio for their dedication throughout the week. “We all know how hard we work every day,” he said. “Thanks a lot to you guys.” The win propels Fonseca to a career-high No. 28 in the ATP rankings — his first time inside the top 30.
The Basel title marks a significant breakthrough in a season that has seen Fonseca rise from a promising prospect to one of the tour’s most exciting young stars. Yet, his victory speech revealed a more emotional side. His family travelled all the way from Brazil, arriving just one hour before the match began. “My parents believed in me since I was a kid. It’s a pleasure to be your son,” he said, fighting back tears as he thanked them and his uncle, who also made the trip.
The teenager’s words also carried deep respect for his opponent. “I need to congratulate Alejandro for this amazing week,” Fonseca said. “I know another final is tough, but keep working, keep the process — for sure the future is bright for you.” It was Davidovich Fokina’s fifth consecutive defeat in a final and his fourth runner-up finish of 2025. The 26-year-old Spaniard still hasn't lifted a single title in his career. However, despite another heartbreak, the Spaniard’s consistency guarantees him a career-high ranking of No. 15 next week.

“Everywhere I go, there are Brazilians cheering for me”

Beyond his performance, Fonseca’s personality continues to win over fans around the world. During his speech, he took a moment to acknowledge the incredible support of Brazilian fans, who filled the St. Jakobshalle with chants and flags. “It’s just crazy how everywhere I go there are Brazilians in the stands, screaming and calling my name,” he said. “It’s a pleasure to represent this amazing country.”
The victory also carried symbolic meaning for Fonseca, who grew up watching the Swiss Indoors on TV as a child. “This is a tournament I watched on TV, seeing Roger playing and winning here like ten times,” he recalled. “It’s a pleasure to play on this court for the first time — and for sure it’s not going to be the last time.” His mention of Federer, the 10-time Basel champion, underlined just how surreal the experience felt for the teenager.
Fonseca’s humility shone throughout his remarks. Though visibly nervous, he ended his speech with a mix of gratitude and disbelief. “Sorry, I’m a little bit nervous — it’s just my second time here,” he said, smiling. “Thanks to the organisation, the ball kids, the transportation guys, everyone who made this tournament possible.” The young Brazilian’s genuine tone and emotional delivery earned him a standing ovation from the Basel crowd.
As he prepares to fulfil his team’s shaving promise, Fonseca’s rise shows no signs of slowing down. His Basel title not only gives him his biggest career win but also solidifies his status as one of the most promising players on tour. And with his family, his coaches, and an army of Brazilian fans behind him, the teenager seems ready to make many more promises — and keep them.
