Joao Fonseca achieves the most important title of his career by becoming champion at the ATP 500 Swiss Indoors Basel, after defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 6-4. The Brazilian secures his spot in the top-30 for the first time in his career and wins the second title of his young career.
It was a match dominated by the Brazilian, who converted 3/13 break opportunities throughout the match, while Davidovich Fokina could only manage one break in 4 opportunities. The Spaniard fell in the 5th final of his career – and the 4th of this season – as he continues without lifting his first ATP level trophy.
The 19-year-old star capitalized on a week marked by the physical complications of his rivals. After overcoming the first round against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (7-6, 6-3), Fonseca did not have to take the court in the round of 16 against Jakub Mensik after the Czech's withdrawal, and he also did not finish his match against Denis Shapovalov – who retired when he was down in the third set (3-6, 6-3, 4-1).
In the semi-finals, he defeated Jaume Munar in a close match – reaching the second final of his career and the first at an ATP 500. Against Davidovich Fokina, he showed that he is not intimidated by great challenges and ended up securing his second title – which adds to his Argentina Open trophy from the beginning of the season. The young star guarantees his best ranking as World No. 28 starting Monday, while Davidovich will debut as No. 15.

Fonseca breaks early to take the first set

Fonseca quickly took the advantage in the first set, getting an early break and then saving a couple of break points against him to take a 3-0 lead. Davidovich would react to return the break a couple of games later (2-3), but Fonseca responded with a break back and was ahead once again.
The South American player was close to a third break – and had a couple of set points from the return at 5-2, but finally had to wait until his service game to close the set 6-3. Both players were even in unforced errors – with 3 each – but Fonseca was much more aggressive, with 14 winners against only 4 from his opponent.

Fonseca doesn't concede a single break point in the second set

As soon as the second set began, Fonseca once again took the lead, securing his third break point. With impeccable serving, he took a 2-0 lead and maintained it with solid service games. The 19-year-old only needed to hold serve for the rest of the set to claim the victory and the title, while Davidovich Fokina fought for a comeback, something that became almost impossible against Fonseca's serving effectiveness.
The advantage was on the side of the Brazilian, who seemed closer to achieving a second break than Davidovich was to leveling the match. The South American held on with excellent serving: 80% first serve percentage, winning 85% of those points and 80% of points played with the second serve. Fonseca did not concede any break points and ended up claiming the victory without complications, in a set where he barely conceded four points on his serve, to close out the victory 6-3, 6-4 after one hour and 26 minutes.
