Jannik Sinner is the champion at the 2025
Vienna Open seeing off
Alexander Zverev in the final 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. This is despite the Italian struggling physically throughout the tie which will throw his plans up in the air as he heads to the Paris Masters and the ATP Finals.
It is a fourth title of the season for the World No.2 and he now levels his Head-to-Head with Zverev in what was a tight battle. He started to cramp in particular towards the end but managed to weather his late issues. Similar to Cincinnati last year when he also faced off against Zverev, it was a similar complexion. He just needed to hold on and he did so narrowly 7-5.
It is a 22nd career title and 21 consecutive wins on indoor hardcourts. Sinner started the week very much criticised for his snub of the Davis Cup but he will likely look back when the season ends very much glad he didn't play it given that he already has a busy end to the season planned and given he seemingly cramped up in this match, it could be a shrewd move.
Zverev took an early lead in the tie as he took it to Sinner who went 3-1 down and then had break points to go 4-1 up but didn't manage to take them. The same could be said for Zverev at 4-2 as he managed to miss chances to go 5-1 up and Sinner stayed in it. It was pretty emphatic from that juncture but finally Zverev managed to seal it 6-3 to send an early statement to the otherside of the court.
In the second set, Sinner went 2-0 up as he aimed to stamp his authority finally. He held for 3-0 and was in the ascendancy from there with Zverev's holds of serve even being a bit of a chore for the German as he looked for a route through to a winning position. Sinner made it 4-1 and managed to do what he needed to after the early breaks and that is hold his serve. He went 4-1 up and then 5-2 with Zverev barely getting a point on Sinner's serve in the latter half of the set as Sinner turned it around in his favour.
Zverev had his turn to lead and after Sinner missed break points he went one away from the win at 5-4. This after Sinner spurned it at 2-2. But Zverev never got a match point and despite Sinner cramping in the latter half, he managed to win through. He held for 5-5 and then broke on his one chance at 6-5 before easily winning through.
A missed chance for Zverev but in reality, he has qualified for the ATP Finals this week so he heads into Paris a happy man. The bigger concern is whether Sinner will be fine for Paris as he heads to the French capital and starts his campaign in the coming days.
“It feels amazing. It was such a difficult start in the final for me. Down a break.. I had some chances in the first set, couldn’t use them. He was serving very very well. I tried to stick there mentally. Trying to play my best tennis when it counts. Third set was a bit of a rollercoaster. I was feeling very well the ball at times. I tried to push. Very happy to win another title. It’s very special," said Sinner after the win.
"Most important is trying to not give up. Trying to stay there. Trying to see what the situation is. I just tried to make the right choices at the right time. I think that was the key today. Serving well, saving energy in my service games was important too. It was a very great performance from me, but I feel like it was from both sides.”
