Novak Djokovic was dumped out of the 2024 Australian Open by a superb display from Jannik Sinner who sealed the win 6-1, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 to reach a maiden Grand Slam final and end another streak from the great Serbian in Australia.
Laura Robson who was out on the grounds during the match lauded Sinner as 'outstanding' and said it was a result she saw coming but perhaps not in a Grand Slam environment and that the reaction of the fans on the ground was slightly muted as many expected Djokovic to continue his excellence instead of face his demise. Sinner faces Alexander Zverev or Daniil Medvedev in Sunday's final.
"The atmosphere behind me (in Garden Square) was slightly muted actually when Sinner won, because there is certainly a lot of Novak Djokovic fans behind me. They had their flags, they were ready to celebrate and make it more of the same from what they'd seen last year, but Sinner crashed the party totally. He was outstanding," said Robson on Eurosport.
"I love that he didn't get disappointed after having the match point in the third set. He just committed to the game plan even more. It feels like we've felt this result coming from the last few months but to do it in a best-of-five match at a Grand Slam with so many people who didn't think he could do it based on his performance in the semi-finals of Wimbledon last year. Just phenomenal."
