World number three Daniil Medvedev booked his place in the final of the Australian Open after producing one of the most remarkable performances against Germany’s tennis star Alexander Zverev.
The 27-year-old came back from two sets down to win the contest with a score of 5-7, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6, 6-4 to book a showdown with Italy’s Jannik Sinner on Sunda to claim the first Grand Slam of 2024.
The 26-year-old looked dominant from the beginning. He started brightly and went ahead 4-1. However, Medvedev came back strongly and levelled the set at 5-5.
Zverev managed to keep his nerve and won the next two games to clinch the set with a score of 7-5. In the second set, the Hamburg-born continued his dominance as he broke the serve of the 2021 US Open winner in the fifth game. From there on, he did not look back and went on to win the set with a score of 6-3.
From there on, it was a Medvedev show who, despite looking uncomfortable at the start of the third set, went from strength to strength and won the next three sets to seal his place in the all-important grand finale.
The victory was an extremely special one as at one stage, according to Australian Open official website, the Russian tennis star had just 6% win chances after losing the first two sets.
At the end of the match, the biggest difference between the players proved to be the discipline as Medvedev committed 41 unforced errors, 29 fewer than Zverev who ended up committing 70 unforced errors.
He is now set to face off the current world number four Italy’s Jannik Sinner who booked his place in his first Grand Slam final after defeating the current world number one and Serbia’s legendary tennis star Novak Djokovic with a score of 6-1, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3.
