Jannik Sinner's doping case may not be over just yet as the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) confirmed to the German press agency that it retains the right to appeal to CAS.
The World No.1 escaped a ban despite failing two drug tests due to the banned substance Clostobol being found in his urine sample. But now Sinner who albeit under very much heightened scrutiny could be brought back into the fire.
Confirming to ASB Zeitung, WADA said they could take the case to CAS if deemed necessary after a thorough deliberation. This was the route alternately that Simona Halep had to take to clear her name no mind to be brought under scrutiny once more. So Sinner could go the opposite direction.
Revealed months after, it was confirmed that he tested positive twice for a banned substance Clostebol on March 10 and 18 and he was provisionally suspended for this from April 4-5 and then from April 17-20 when the tests took place. He appealed both times and was successful both times. According to WADA rules, if a provisional suspension is accepted, it remains anonymous.
This is the route that saw Sinner get away with it hitting the public consciousness. It only hit the public when the ITIA confirmed that he bore no fault or negligence for the finding.
The Italian's team said that it entered Sinner's body through his physio. He used the spray for a cut on his finger which contained the banned substance. He then massaged him bare handed. But Sinner has received vehement criticism mostly from the likes of Nick Kyrgios and Denis Shapovalov.
The former called for Sinner to follow the same route as others and serve a two year ban as despite not knowingly doing it, he did test positive twice. No doubt it will be a storm that doesn't go away for the Italian anytime soon.
