Aussie tennis star Nick Kyrgios fired back at critics who celebrated his ATP ranking drop, following his withdrawal from the 2023 Canadian Open.
Kyrgios has been dealing with multiple injuries this season, which have seen him withdraw from several tournaments. The 2022 Wimbledon runner-up was unable to replicate his feat at SW19 this year, as he was forced to withdraw from the event due to a wrist injury.
Although he was scheduled to compete at this year's Canadian Open, Kyrgios was once again forced to withdraw due to an injury. After reaching the quarterfinals last year, a withdrawal would see Kyrgios lose even more ranking points. This led to several critics celebrating the 28-year old's downfall and potential exit from the top 100.
Kyrgios was quick to respond to the comments aginst him online, claiming that he enjoys the privilege of a "protected ranking" which would ensure him wildcard entry in any tournament on the Tour.
"Protected ranking of 21 and will be able to get wildcards whenever I please. Good try tho," wrote Kyrgios on Twitter.
Tennis players can be deemed eligible for Protected Ranking after petitioning the ATP CEO for Entry Protection after they have been physically injured and unable to participate in any tennis events for a minimum period of 6 months.
