Further onto the announcement regarding Wimbledon's prize money in lieu being given to players in the draw, the seeding formula will be changed for 2021 it has been revealed.
The AELTC have decided that the grass court seeding formula; which has been used since 2002 will now be scrapped. This was formally based on their pre-tournament form on grass meaning last year for Rafael Nadal; despite winning Roland Garros, he was put down to no.3.
Roger Federer on the otherhand was propelled to second after winning in Halle; which means that players who participate in the prior grass court swing seemingly have an advantage; but now it will be based solely on rankings.
The statement said the following: "Since last year’s Championships, we have also taken the time to give consideration to the evolution of the sport and the mechanisms of allocating seeding for The Championships. Given the quality of competition, entertainment and modern grass courts.
Following detailed discussion with the player groups, the AELTC has decided that the grass court seeding formula used since 2002 has served its time; from The Championships 2021 seeding for the Gentlemen’s singles draw will be based solely on ranking. There will be no change to the method of seeding for the Ladies’ singles draw."
