Former world No. 7 Fernando Verdasco announced his retirement this week at the ATP 500 Qatar Open, where he teamed up with Novak Djokovic in doubles. The duo made a strong debut, defeating Karen Khachanov and Alexander Bublik 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the second round of the doubles draw.
The 41-year-old Spaniard had made his last appearances on tour in Challenger events, his most recent being in Seville in 2023. Since then, he has been working as a coach, accompanying Jordanian prospect Abedallah Shelbayh, who is currently 21 years old.
Just days ago, it was announced that Verdasco would be coaching Djokovic during this week in Doha, replacing Andy Murray, who did not travel with Nole this time. The three-time Grand Slam champion will, however, continue working with Djokovic at least until Wimbledon.
The biggest surprise came when Verdasco revealed that Doha would be the stage for his farewell, as he would also be joining the 24-time Grand Slam champion to play in the doubles draw. In their first-round match against Khachanov and Bublik, the veteran duo put on a strong performance, allowing the Spanish left-hander to extend his career for at least one more match.
Verdasco received congratulations from his peers after securing a victory he will surely cherish, as he partnered with the most decorated player of all time for his farewell. In the second round, they will face the specialist second-seeded duo of Harri Heliövaara and Henry Patten.
Novak Djokovic has won his doubles match with Fernando Verdasco by a score of 6-1 6-1.
