In a battle of American up and coming players,
J.J. Wolf dumped out Jenson Brooksby by defeating him 6-4 6-4 at the Houston Open.
A couple of Americans tried out their game on the clay of Houston with Wolf taking on Brooksby. Both of them have had really strong showings in Miami albeit Brooksby had the far better one. He is generally more ahead in terms of developing himself as a professional player but today it was Wolf who proved better. Brooksby does not have much experience playing on clay but neither does Wolf.
It was simply a better day for Wolf who is the way more aggressive player. There is not much thinking in the game of Wolf who likes to hit a strong serve and then finish off the point rather quickly. Today he tried to do that and for the most part, it worked with Brooksby simply not having a very good response. They both served well and they both won the majority of those points.
However, the crucial distinction came on break points. Wolf allowed only two and saved one while Brooksby allowed six and saved only 3 of them. Ultimately that proved enough to overcome the red-hot Brooksby 6-4 6-4 in 93 minutes of play.
