Dominic Thiem was on top of the world back in 2020 when he won the US Open and was touted as one of the best in the world at that time, but disaster struck after wrist issues found themselves needing surgery and the Austrian has not been the same player since.

A few results aside, the consistency has not been there and Thiem himself admitted at the start of the year that retirement was likely if he didn't make progress up the top 100 after a few years of middling results. It went from bad to worse after returning to Challengers recently and he has confirmed that he has been suffering from wrist issues again after starting a new regime post Australian Open and that the clicks that saw him bothered after his surgery are back.

But while some in the comments thought this video was announcing retirement initially, Thiem reassured viewers by saying that he is vying to play Estoril Open which is between April 1-7, 2024 so only a few days away and is practicing less to make sure he is ready for that.

"There were many rumours the last (few) days and I want to make it through my own social media because I want to make sure you all know the truth. As you all know, I started to practice again with my dad after the Australian Open to get back to the practice that made me really good. We started to practice as I did when I was younger which was a lot of intensity, a lot of strokes, hours on the court.

"Unfortunately a little bit before the Challenger in Hungary, the first tournament back for me, my wrist started to have issues again. I started to have those clicks again which bothered me straight after I came back from the injury three years ago. This strange feeling came back and it turned into pain over the last weeks. There's a minor inflammation there and that's why I pulled out of the Napoli Challenger. The situation is I turned down the volume a little bit, I'm practicing a little bit less and shorter as the chances are good that I can make it to Estoril. That's the plan. I want to start playing there again which is my goal. Thank you for all the support and see you soon."
