Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev are through to the next round of the Madrid Open following win on Wednesday.
Medvedev stepped onto the courts in the early 11:00 CET timeslot to face Davidovich Fokina. It was all but a smooth start for Medvedev who is not a fan of clay. He vented his frustration quite a bit after losing the first set saying that he didn't want to play on this surface.
He even got a warning earlier for 'damaging' the surface after which he told the umpire: 'It's already damaged. It's clay.' Nonetheless, he was able to find his footing later on securing the 2nd set with 6-4 before smashing Davidovich Fokina 6-2 in the final one.
A good win for Medvedev who will be joined in the next round by Alexander Zverev who played his best match in a long time against Nishikori. The German was locked in from the start playing extremely well especially on serve. It took him only 75 minutes to dispatch Nishikori 6-3 6-2 at an event the Japanese plays traditionally well.
Zverev was striking the ball very good and he was able to minimize the number of errors. Nishikori could not keep up with Zverev from the baseline and most rallies were won by Zverev. Combined with the strong serving that saw him hit 5 aces while committing 0 double faults, it was more than enough.
