Alexander Zverev fought back from being down against Coric to reach the US Open semifinal after a three and half hour battle.
Alexander Zverev and
Borna Coric played a spectacular match, a match more spectacular than many thought it would be. It was expected that Zverev would continue his stellar form especially when serving. Contrary to that we got smashed in the 1set set by Coric who came out furious. He was aggressive, he was hitting shots and Zverev got smashed 6-1. After that, we got two sets of superb tennis where details determined who won the sets.
The first of those sets started slow but it got complicated when Coric broke Zverev to take a 4-2 lead. It looked like a major upset was in stores but Zverev managed to fight back and force a tiebreak. In it, we saw a hard-fought battle where Zverev emerged victorious 8-6. The next set saw a similar pattern but this time it was Zverev who took the lead. He surrendered it shortly after that and once again we ended up in a tiebreak. This tiebreak was superb by Zverev as he smashed Coric 7-1.
The 4th and final set was quicker than the previous two as both players were aiming for quicker points. Midway through the set, Coric had three break points but failed to convey either of them. A couple of games later it was Zverev who had breakpoints but unlike Coric, he took them to give himself a 5-3 lead. Then he served for the match and it was the 3rd match point he had that he conveyed to book a place in the semifinal of the
US Open. A good showing especially after a shaky start to continue his bid to win his 1st grand slam title.
