Alexander
Zverev defeated Adrian Mannarino at the Cincinnati Open with a score of 6-2,
6-3, reaching his first Masters 1000 semifinals of the year.
The German
entered the Western & Southern Open as the 16th seed, defeating strong
opponents like Grigor Dimitrov and Yoshito Nishioka. He also surprised the
world No. 3 Daniil Medvedev in the round of 16 with a score of 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
Adrian
Mannarino, aged 35, is experiencing one of the best moments of his career.
After his triumphs at the Cincinnati Open, he climbed to the top 25. He
defeated Richard Gasquet, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Mackenzie McDonald, who
retired with a score of 6-4, 3-0 in favor of the Frenchman.
Sascha
secured the first break in the second game of the match and comfortably held
his service throughout the set. At 5-2, Zverev struggled to capitalize on the
third set point in his favor but managed to advance with a 6-2 lead.
Mannarino
won 55% of the points with his first serve and only 24% when Zverev was
serving. The German was aggressive in shortening points and hit 5 winners
compared to none from the Frenchman.
In the
beginning of the second set, Mannarino once again lost his service, giving a
comfortable 3-0 advantage to the former US Open finalist. Despite being close
to losing his service again at 1-4, World No. 32 managed a challenging 14-point
game.
Mannarino
held his service reliably but couldn't do much against Zverev's effectiveness,
who ultimately maintained his lead and secured the set 6-2, 6-3 in an hour and
twelve minutes.
This marks
Zverev's eighth victory over Mannarino in as many matches and allows the German
to reach the semifinals of a Masters 1000 for the first time this year. Since
2017, he has reached at least one final in tournaments of this category.
The former
world No. 2 is steadily improving his position in the ATP rankings and has now
guaranteed himself to become the new world No. 12, while also placing ninth in
the ATP Race. In the semifinals, he will face the winner of the match between
Taylor Fritz and Novak Djokovic.
