World No. 41 Amanda Anisimova delivered a stunning performance to defeat 2021 US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez in straight sets and advance to the quarter-finals of the Qatar Open. This marks her fourth career WTA 1000 quarter-final and her first in Doha.
The American has taken down several high-profile opponents this week, including Victoria Azarenka and ninth seed Paula Badosa. Against Fernandez, she produced perhaps her most dominant win, cruising to a 6-3, 6-0 victory.
On paper, it looked like an evenly matched contest between two rising stars aiming to cement their place among the best. However, Anisimova was particularly sharp on serve, landing 69% of first serves and winning 76% of those points, while Fernandez managed a 66% first-serve percentage but won just 52% of those points.
The opening set was competitive at first, but Anisimova quickly took control, breaking in the fourth game to go up 4-1. Fernandez had some break point opportunities but struggled to counter the American’s powerful serve.
The second set was a complete one-sided affair, with Anisimova excelling in key moments. She converted three out of four break points while saving both of the break points she faced in the second game. In just 27 minutes, she bageled Fernandez 6-0, winning seven consecutive games.
Anisimova has once again shown that when she is in form, she can be a serious contender. In the quarter-finals, she will face Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk, who stunned third seed Coco Gauff in the second round. With this run, Anisimova guarantees an eight-spot rise in the rankings, reaching world No. 33 in the live rankings.
