It is the end of the road for the dream doubles tandem of Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios at the Brisbane International as they tasted defeat going into the new year in the second round.
The pair were granted wildcard entry into the tournament by organisers and lost 6-2, 3-6, 10-8 on Wednesday to the top seeded team of Nikola Mektic and Michael Venus albeit there was a key moment where it fell apart which could've seen Djokovic and Kyrgios carry on.
A Djokovic double fault with the pair leading 8-6 in the match tie-break was key to the defeat as they slumped to the final four points of the match from there.
Djokovic and Kyrgios opened up with a crowd pleasing affair in their opening doubles tie but lost to the top seeds with Mektic showing his delight in the post match interview at starting the New Year with a thrilling win.
"Incredible," Mektic told the crowd. "I was very happy when I saw them, I could play them on the first of January. It´s an amazing feeling to start the year like this and we knew there would be points like that against players like this."
A sold-out affair, Djokovic and Kyrgios whether people like them or not put bums on seats. Also it gave them another chance to see Kyrgios who lost his opening singles match on Tuesday after an 18-month absence from the tour due to injury. Djokovic won his first singles match and will now face Gael Monfils who he has a 19-0 Head to Head record against.
Whilst the doubles team is over and one that fans who have followed their relationship long term would be shocked would've happened, it gives Kyrgios more vital practice also ahead of his Special K's reunion with Thanasi Kokkinakis.
