It was remarked that Aryna Sabalenka had not reached her best at the Brisbane International and that Mirra Andreeva was the true test but it was one that she passed with flying colours as she saw off the 17-year-old to reach the final 6-3, 6-2.

It will be a final that will see her face a surprise package in Polina Kudermetova. Bearing more of a striking resemblance to Anastasia Potapova than her compatriot sister Veronika, the rising star took down Anhelina Kalinina in a wide open section of the draw.

One that was left as such due to the demise of Emma Navarro in the opening round losing to Kimberly Birrell who went on to be defeated by Kalinina. But it was a 6-4, 6-3 success for her today.

It was a scoreline in Sabalenka's case that perhaps flattered the World No.1 with Andreeva in most of the games during the tie so wasn't as one sided as perhaps it looked on paper. But it was a match that she lost also while she wasn't her best at Roland Garros last year so one demon as such to vanquish.

Also there was the danger perhaps of giving her too much respect to go into the clash. They played together at World Tennis League in recent weeks striking up a further bond and she spoke in glowing terms about the teenager. But she managed to weather the storm.

She will also look for revenge after last year. Albeit she can't exact it on Elena Rybakina. Sabalenka looked in even better form to start 2024 but was well beaten by the Kazakh who then faltered at the Australian Open.

One facet always is that the curse is there with Brisbane that the winner doesn't win the Australian Open so while Sabalenka may win tomorrow, it may not hold the key to Melbourne success.
