Great Britain are into the Quarter-Finals of the 2025 United Cup after taking the lead in their tie with Australia with the opening win from Katie Boulter and given the fact they saw off Argentina earlier this week, it was enough to move through already.
Boulter delivered a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win over Olivia Gadecki in Sydney. But it was more the fact that she doesn't have to play her fiance, Alex de Minaur in mixed doubles now that gives her the most delight.
The storyline all week despite Australia having Ebden and Perez, two doubles stars on their team was if Australia would pit De Minaur against Boulter in mixed doubles. But that is unlikely to happen now.
They flew together and De Minaur kissed her on the cheek as they started the tie after getting engaged recently so they don't want to face off likely with the tie on the line.
"I'm very happy to start my new year like that," said Boulter post match. "I feel like I've actually lost a lot of sleep recently over the thought of playing my fiance in doubles so I'm so tired and just very happy to get through this rubber."
In terms of unlikely to happen, the same can be said about Australia's hopes of qualifying for the Quarter-Finals meaning both the defending champions Germany and finalists Australia are likely to slump out.
They would need De Minaur and Ebden/Perez to both win in straight sets then will check the games won and lost. So while thee is still an opportunity, it could see Boulter ironically become the hero again for Britain in the mixed doubles and send the home hopes packing.
A tournament where Australian fans come out in numbers to support their heroes, the first match proved to be the issue in their charge with defeat to Argentina seeing them behind the 8 ball when it comes to qualification.
