Jannik Sinner is the first player into the final of the 2024 Shanghai Masters and has done his part for a potential return meeting of the best rivalry at the end of 2023. Will it be Novak Djokovic that awaits.
Djokovic faces off against Taylor Fritz shortly who he will be expected to beat due to a 9-0 Head to Head record in favour of the 24-time Grand Slam champion. But if Fritz does manage to notch a one on his record, he will set up a repeat of the US Open final in the process. Sinner in sealing the win saw off Tomas Machac 6-4, 7-5.
Machac has been superb for the past two weeks and is showing some of his best tennis right now sat at World No.33. He is set to move up to the top 25 next week after this tournament concludes after starting the week at World No.33. This is a new career high for him.
But he came up against a Sinner who came into his own at the back end of last season and is doing so again this season. He has been one of only a few big names not to complain about the calendar and has bided his time in many ways to put a final run together in Beijing and also a final in Shanghai with only one big tournament outside of the ATP Finals to go in Paris next month.
Machac though came out of the gates swinging and went into a 2-0 lead early doors. But Sinner started to find his range and rhythm and broke back on his third attempt at 2-2 before going 3-2 up. He continued to pressure the Machac serve but the Czech ace stayed resolute. Until the final stanza of the set when he took a hold of serve in dominant fashion and that confidence flowed into Machac's serve as he broke and sealed the set 6-4.
The second set was a lot more even with hardly no break chances and Machac testing Sinner to his limits. But the Italian delivered breaking at the last opportunity to seal the win ironically after Machac shouted at Sinner jokingly that he plays too fast and that he broke his racket. But this then led to Sinner sealing the win so done in superb fashion by the World No.1.
