There has been a recent increase in
pickleball-related injuries in America, and the subsequent increase in healthcare costs has caught the attention of tennis fans.
With pickleball's spike in popularity, there has been a rivalry with tennis fans as the latter believe the former are slowly taking over tennis courts. American journalist Joe Weisenthal took to social media to share details from a report published by Bloomberg, which used the findings from UBS Group AG analysts to determine how injuries caused by pickleball were driving up healthcare costs.
The findings showed that pickleball's player base had grown by 150% in 2023, resulting in an estimated $377 million in medical expenses associated to the sport. This led to several tennis fans taking shots at pickleball, with many finding it humorous that people could get injured while playing such a slow-paced sport.
"If you get injured playing pickleball you should be put down like a racehorse with a broken leg," a fan tweeted.
"Pickleball players are the type to go to the emergency room with a sprained ankle," another user commented.
"Good. Now ban pickleball forever so I stop having to hear about it from the US tennis journos every five minutes," wrote another fan.
"Pickleball must be stopped before it's too late," warned another fan.
