Jannik Sinner has carried Italy over the line and into the semi-finals of the
Davis Cup Finals by seeing off the Netherlands in the decisive doubles rubber on Thursday afternoon.
After dispatching Tallon Griekspoor 7-6(3), 6-1 to level the tie after Botic van de Zandschulp got them going, it was up to the team of Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego to anchor them home.
They did so defeating Tallon Griekspoor and Wesley Koolhof 6-3, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals for the second year running. They last managed back-to-back Davis Cup semi-finals between 1996-1998.
In their doubles tie, Italy broke decisively for 5-3 when Koolhof pushed his return into the net before Sinner sealed it with an ace and it was once again the tale of a pivotal break as they went 4-3 up with Griekspoor this time faltering and they served it out.
"We were under a lot of pressure and starting a little bit as the underdogs in this deciding doubles match but it was a huge pleasure for me to play with (Sonego), we have an incredible team," said Sinner.
Serbia are up next this evening facing Great Britain and we could see Novak Djokovic v Jannik Sinner for the third time in two weeks in the semi-finals. Australia face Finland in a surprise package semi-final on Friday.
