American
football player Damar Hamlin posted a video showcasing his tennis skills and
sent his support to
Jessica Pegula at the
US Open.
World No. 3
Pegula has had a successful US Open, winning all three of her singles matches
in the main draw against Camila Giorgi (6-2, 6-2), Patricia Mara Tig (6-3,
6-1), and 26th seed Elina Svitolina (6-4, 4-6, 6-2).
In the
fourth round, she will face Madison Keys in an all-American clash at Arthur
Ashe Stadium on Monday. Pegula is the daughter of the owner of the NFL's
Buffalo Bills, a team that Damar Hamlin is also part of.
The athlete
posted a video to show his support for his compatriot as she seeks her first
Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows.
“Working on
my serve!! Rooting for Jessica Pegula @usopen,” he wrote
“😂 lefty??” Pegula
respond.
The
29-year-old tennis player had previously shown her support for Hamlin during a
challenging time in January 2023 when the Buffalo Bills player had a serious
injury during an NFL match that left him on the brink of death.
As a
tribute, Pegula wore the number 3, the same as Hamlin's, during her
second-round match at the Australian Open (a victory against Aliaksandra
Sasnovich.)
At that
time, when asked about the patch with the number 3 on her skirt, Pegula
explained that it was a way to support Hamlin.
“I
definitely wanted to do something,” she said after the match
“We were
kind of figuring out what the Bills and the Sabres were doing, just as far as
what was the message. I knew they would probably do something and what message
were they trying to send. It ended up being kind of the '3' was the symbol,” Pegula
added.
In the
fourth round of the US Open, she will face world No. 17 Keys for the second
time in her career. Their first encounter took place at the 2022 San Diego
Open, with Pegula emerging victorious.
If she
manages to defeat her opponent, Pegula will reach the quarterfinals of a Grand
Slam for the sixth time between 2022 and 2023, although she has never advanced
to the final four.
