Garbine
Muguruza has posted a video of
Elina Svitolina training, indicating that her
return to the
WTA tour may be imminent.
The Spanish
tennis player last competed in a professional tournament at the Lyon Open in
February, where she suffered a first-round loss to Linda Noskova. After that,
it was expected that Muguruza would return during the clay court season to
prepare for the French Open, a tournament she won in 2016.
However, in
April, she announced that she would be skipping the clay and grass court
seasons, opting for an extended break:
“Spending
time with family and friends and it’s really been healthy and amazing, so I am
going to lengthen this period till summer.. therefore I am going to miss clay
and grass season.”
After
several months away from the tour and currently ranked world No. 205,
Muguruza's fans might have received a sign of her potential return. She recently
shared a video on her Instagram stories of Elina Svitolina training at the
David Lloyd Club in Madrid. Muguruza was seen courtside while the recent
Wimbledon semifinalist was practicing:
“Inspiring,”
Muguruza wrote on her Instagram stories.
The video,
which was posted on her Instagram stories, suggests that Muguruza's comeback to
competition is imminent. Although she is not currently entered in any upcoming
tournaments, including the
US Open, the two-time Grand Slam champion and former
world No. 1 should have no trouble obtaining wild cards.
To regain
her form and make a stronger impression than in 2022 and early 2023, Muguruza
will need to earn points to compensate for her time away from competition.
After winning the 2021 WTA Finals, Muguruza struggled in 2022, finishing the
year as world No. 55 with a record of 12 wins and 17 losses.
It was the
first time in her career that she had more losses than wins in the four Grand
Slam tournaments since 2012 when she made her debut at the US Open and lost in
the first round as a 19-year-old (with a 0-1 record).
Looking
ahead, Muguruza will aim to regain her top form and build on her previous
successes in the sport.
