Day Four of the 2023
French Open on the Clay Courts of Paris is upon us on Wednesday with the
schedule confirmed and our
preview will feature
Novak Djokovic,
Carlos Alcaraz,
Jessica Pegula and
Aryna Sabalenka among others.
Pegula starts on Court Philippe Chatrier against Camila Giorgi, which is followed by Caroline Garcia who played the night session last time out. But this time, it reverts to type with Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic set to be the two talisman names in Paris in the evening.
Matches to watch
Novak Djokovic v Marton Fucsovics
The night session goes to Djokovic who returns to continue his quest for a third title in Paris when he faces Hungarian, Marton Fucsovics.
He began against Aleksandar Kovacevic sealing victory in straight sets. He dropped just five games initially before his opponent took it to a tie-break.
Fucsovics on the otherhand saw off Hugo Grenier and is 7-5 at the clay court major where he has reached the second round in his last three appearances at least.
Head to Head wise, they have never met on clay but Djokovic has won all four prior meetings on other surfaces.
Carlos Alcaraz v Taro Daniel
Alcaraz spoke of feeling invincible after opening his campaign earlier this week against Flavio Cobolli and next up is Taro Daniel.
Similar to his last opponent, they have only met once in a challenger tournament with a semi-final win for Alcaraz over the Japanese ace in Oeiras.
It was a three set tie which Alcaraz breezed through finally. He will hope for a similar equation here.
Pegula, Sabalenka, Tsitsipas, Kasatkina all in action
Two of the top names in the women's draw will also continue their campaign on Wednesday with Jessica Pegula and Aryna Sabalenka involved facing Giorgi for the former to kick off Chatrier proceedings.
While for Sabalenka, it is third on Suzanne Lenglen against Iryna Shymanovich. Daria Kasatkina plays before her against Marketa Vondrousova, while before that it is Stefanos Tsitsipas who faces Roberto Carballes Baena.
On the other outside courts, Elina Svitolina, Jelena Ostapenko, Sloane Stephens and Leylah Fernandez all continue their campaigns, with also a creeper for match of the day as Stan Wawrinka faces Thanasi Kokkinakis.
