More Quarter-Finalists will be confirmed on Monday at the 2023
French Open on the courts of
Roland Garros with Day Nine upon us on Monday with some interesting choices for the show courts.
The main story perhaps is
Iga Swiatek, the World No.1 who will start her second week on Court Suzanne Lenglen instead of Court Philippe Chatrier.
Instead,
Coco Gauff and
Ons Jabeur will anchor the WTA charge on the main court with
Casper Ruud - Nicolas Jarry and
Alexander Zverev again in the Night Session against Grigor Dimitrov.
Matches to watch
Iga Swiatek v Lesia Tsurenko
As ever our
preview starts with Matches to Watch and it is Swiatek that we begin with. She faces Lesia Tsurenko who again has had a superb run.
But perhaps the reasoning for her demotion is evident in their Head to Head record and recent meeting in Rome.
Swiatek has been dishing out Bagels despite her not liking that term all week with 6-0 scorelines in most sets as she has eased through her work.
This though has irked some with many paying the top price for Chatrier feeling empty handed by the quickness of her and
Holger Rune's wins a few days ago.
Tsurenko in last facing Swiatek was swept aside 6-2, 6-0 with their other meeting at Roland Garros last year also presenting the same scoreline.
Casper Ruud v Nicolas Jarry
His first match to watch this tournament in the previews but Casper Ruud faces a fellow clay-court master in Nicolas Jarry who has been in superb form second on Philippe Chatrier.
So far Ruud has navigated tricky ties after his first round seeing off Giulio Zeppieri and Zhizhen Zhang and now face the Chilean who has become a force.
Second only to Carlos Alcaraz in clay court wins so far this season, he is on a seven-match unbeaten streak on clay.
Interestingly too, their recent latest meeting went Jarry's way in Geneva as he sealed the title following that. Making up for lost time after his drugs suspension.
Alexander Zverev v Grigor Dimitrov
With a similar feel to Zverev's win over Frances Tiafoe, it is two well established names going at it in the Night Session.
Zverev a year ago faced the worst moment of his on court career so far as he was left in a wheelchair after a horrific injury against Rafael Nadal.
Rebuilding hasn't been easy but he is starting to put it together and holds a 3-1 record against Dimitrov going back to 2014.
All three of the latest meetings have gone the way of Zverev and he faces Dimitrov continuing to prove a point that he is still a force.
Gauff and Jabeur also on Chatrier, Rune and Haddad-Maia also in action
Other matches to round up include Coco Gauff who many criticised on social media for her inclusion on Chatrier amid Swiatek's demotion.
But she gets her reward after defeating 16-year-old prodigy Mirra Andreeva with a top slot. She faces Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.
A match which could've been Veronika Kudermetova v Gauff, Schmiedlova will look for another shock.
While Ons Jabeur continues her campaign opening up against Bernarda Pera who continues to gain traction.
As does Holger Rune who faces Francisco Cerundolo in another battle similar to Ruud v Jarry which could be Match of the Day.
Elena Rybakina perhaps could've played on Chatrier but after her withdrawal,
Sara Sorribes Tormo who caught the eye due to a storm surrounding a default in doubles will face Beatriz Haddad-Maia first up on Suzanne Lenglen.
