Aryna Sabalenka will face
Daria Kasatkina in the fourth round of the 2023
US Open.
Second seed Sabalenka will take on thirteenth seed Daria Kasatkina on Arthur Ashe today, Monday, September 4. The Belarusian has performed exceptionally so far at Flushing Meadows and is yet to drop a set, having moved past Maryna Zanevska, Jodie Anna Burrage, and Clara Burel with little difficulty. However, Kasatkina will be the toughest opponent she has faced to date at the tournament.
Meanwhile, Kasatkina has come up against Alycia Parks, Sofia Kenin, and Greet Minnen so far at the Slam, defeating the two Americans in three sets before outsing Minnen 6-3, 6-4.
Sabalenka leads head-to-head
The two players have faced each other six times before, with Sabalenka leading their head-to-head 4-2. They last faced each other at the Cincinnati Open two weeks ago, where Kasatkina lost to the second seed in the Round of 16.
However, they are tied 2-2 on hardcourts, meaning both of Kasatkina's wins against Sabalenka were on the same surface as the US Open and suggesting that the match could end up being a close one.
Nevertheless, Sabalenka will likely be motivated by the knowledge that she will now finally move up to World No. 1 when the
WTA Ranking is updated next week, after a long battle to dethrone
Iga Swiatek.
Odds in Sabalenka's favor
Sabalenka is one of the most powerful hitters on the WTA Tour and has a huge serve which will put her in a strong position against Kasatkina. However, both players like to use the baseline to dominate their opponent so it will be interesting to see how that plays out against each other in New York.
Overall, Sabalenka's consistency and motivation are predicted to carry her through to the quarter-finals of the US Open.
