Spending most of the time at home, world number 14 in the WTA Ranking, Johanna Konta spoke to Standard Sport about how she sees the current situation.
After breaking into TOP 10 for the first time in 2016, Konta ended her 2017 season as number 9. However, the next season was not successful for her as she ended the year as 37th player of the
WTA Ranking. In 2019, she moved back to 12th but did not enter 2020 ideally when she lost 4 out of 7 matches she played. After the
WTA Tour was suspended until 7th June 2020, Konta spoke to Standart Sport saying:
“Like with every event, it’s heart-breaking, a really sad situation to be faced with. With happening in the world right now, I don't think it will actually change anything I'm currently doing. I’ll still be self-isolating, staying as fit as I can, spending time with my dog and my boyfriend and staying in touch with my family on FaceTime. But it definitely prolongs this reality; not looking too far ahead is going to be really important for me", Konta said.
Konta also commented on the
move of the Roland Garros from May to September. “It’s a really sad situation and it’s very disappointing for them to release their decision in the way that they did. It’s not the act itself, but the manner which was disappointing to everybody in the tennis community. Collectively we are all the limbs that makeup tennis. Without players, there are no tournaments and without tournaments, there are no players."
“The speed of this has definitely been a shock to the system. To have such dramatic changes to our daily lives has been a shock to everyone. The reality is that there is no tennis player earning any money right now; all the tennis players have taken a 100 percent salary cut. Everyone is trying to find the best way possible to stand by a team and support the people you work with and feel close to while not bankrupting yourself", Konta said.
