Bernard Tomic has been a seldom-seen name on the ATP Tour for a few years now. The controversial Aussie has endured a steep decline down the rankings, but has been blessed with some good news in recent times, becoming a dad for the first time with partner Keely Hannah after keeping it a secret for a number of months.
They announced the birth of their daughter, Astara Aurelia, on Hannah's Instagram page, unveiling the great news to the world after keeping it out of the spotlight for numerous weeks and months. The caption said: "The most beautiful secret we've ever kept. Astara Aurelia Tomic 05.04.2026," along with a white heart emoji.
There was a lot of thought behind her name, having a coded meaning behind it. Her name, Astara, is a Greek name meaning 'star' with Aurelia being of Latin origin and translates to 'golden' or 'the golden one'.
Tomic's social media involvement is relatively sparse, not having a presence on any of the platforms. He was in a couple of posts on Hannah's Instagram account, which in total had 56 posts before the latest one of their daughter. Before that, she had not posted anything for 37 weeks, possibly around the time that they would have found out that she was expecting.
Tomic and Hannah began their romance back in 2022 after he split with Aussie influencer Vanessa Sierra. They have had their time in the spotlight, but for the wrong reason after Tomic seemingly retired halfway through a match while arguing with his other half. After losing the first set 6-1, Tomic told Hannah that he had tested positive for COVID-19 earlier in the day. Hannah rebuffed this argument, saying it was from a couple of weeks ago.
This almost sums up his time on court. Once a highly rated youngster, the Aussie made an impression by reaching the 2011 Wimbledon quarterfinal. He has also made the last-eight stage in three Masters 1000 tournaments while also winning four ATP titles, all at 250 level.
However, in recent times his tennis career has gone into disarray. No longer a regular in the ATP tournaments, he is regularly seen grinding it out on the Challenger Tour, looking to find that spark that could elevate him back up to the top level of tennis once more. He has made it to three finals between 2024 and 2025, losing in two of them while withdrawing from the most recent one.
Many have questioned why he continues competing at this level of tennis. Ranked as high as world number 17 in 2016, it is a fall from grace for the 33-year-old whose career has not panned out as some would have expected.
After sinking as low as 835th in 2022, he is now up to world number 191 in the ATP rankings. He showed this improvement at the Australian Open qualifying rounds, making it through to the second stage after getting a lot of support from his native fans but would fail to make it past Arthur Fery. His last involvement on the court came when attempting to qualify for the Mexican Open back in February, possibly linked to becoming a dad.
