Many big names will take the differing path in a few weeks at the
French Open with qualifying entry lists now confirmed with many Grand Slam champions and iconic names entered.
Sloane Stephens and
Bianca Andreescu are two ex US Open champions who now find themselves at a very different point in their previously flourishing careers. Stephens in particular has history with this tournament after reaching the final in 2018 during her real emergence.
Stephens played in Saint-Malo yesterday and lost to top seed Tereza Valentova. She also played qualifying beating Diane Parry in Madrid before falling to Anhelina Kalinina. Still a big name in paper in a field like this, she will aim to win her way through.
But others include
Paula Badosa who is a Quarter-Final in the 2021 edition and has also hit hard times due to an injury which in theory will likely derail her career sooner rather than later. She is third seed behind Veronika Erjavec and Francesca Jones.
Another former finalist in Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is also forced to play it while Andreescu is playing this week in France and will also be involved. She has played smaller tournaments and has no interest it seems also likely due to ranking of playing any of the big events outside of the majors as she tries to build her ranking up the hard way.
Karolina Pliskova, the former World No.1 is also involved. As are former semi-finalists in Tamara Zidansek and Martina Trevisan. Qualifying week starts on May 18.
In the men's draw, World No.137
Grigor Dimitrov who reached the Quarter-Finals two years ago against Jannik Sinner will have to win three matches to qualify. Daniel Mérida Aguilar, Matteo Arnaldi, Benjamin Bonzi, Titouan Droguet, Hugo Gaston, and Pedro Martinez as well as Bernard Tomic also have to qualify. Many of whom of the French contingent can't rely on wildcards this time.
