Boris Becker remains banned from
Wimbledon despite making a return to coaching with high-profile
ATP star
Holger Rune.
The six-time Grand Slam champion was found guilty of hiding £2.5 million in assets and loans to avoid paying debts, instead declaring himself bankrupt. This led to him being jailed for two and a half years in April 2022.
He then served eight months, primarily in Huntercombe prison in Oxfordshire, before being deported to Germany after he was granted an early release in December. However, under the terms of his release, he is not able to re-enter the UK and therefore cannot visit the All England Club or attend the grasscourt major.
Becker's ban stands despite coaching return
Nevertheless, the 55-year-old has made a significant return to the tennis world by becoming the coach of World No. 6 Rune. Prior to this, the 20-year-old did a training week with the former World No. 1 in Monte-Carlo, calling it a "really good week."
Becker then announced that he was set to coach the Danish player for the remainder of the 2023 season.
"I can confirm that I am Holger Rune’s coach. It makes me a little proud that he asked me. The contact has existed for a long time. Now it was a very good fit," he told Eurosport Germany's podcast.
"My calendar allows it and I have always been interested in Holger because he is on the tennis court with so much commitment and temperament. Holger then invited me to a training week in Monte Carlo.
"I also had a long chat there with his mother Aneke and his performance coach Lapo Becherini. The three of us are responsible for Holger from now on. Unfortunately, I can’t be at the tournament in Stockholm this week because of previously arranged appointments.
"But I will be there in Basel at the latest, and afterwards, I will play Paris-Bercy with Holger – and hopefully help him to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin. That is the big goal and that is the task," he explained.
At the moment, it looks as though the partnership is only set to last until the end of the year. However, if they decide to continue into 2024, Rune may have to travel to Wimbledon without his coach.
