Tennis fans were left shocked after seeing the prize money
difference in the Cincinnati Open (Western & Southern Open) between men’s
and women’s singles categories.
The tournament concluded on Sunday with a memorable final in
the men’s category between Serbia’s legendary tennis star Novak Djokovic and
the current world number one Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz.
It was the 36-year-old who came out on top and took his
Wimbledon 2023 final revenge with a score of 5-7, 7-6, 7-6.
Following the final, it was revealed that Djokovic’s prize
money for winning the tournament was more than $1 million — to be exact $1,019,335.
That prize money was more than twice what the women’s
singles category winner America’s Coco Gauff managed to earn for lifting the
same title as she received just $450,000.
Gauff defeated Czech Republic’s Karolina Muchova in the
final of the competition in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-4.
It is not the first time when the pay disparity has been
identified in the world of tennis and it is because of this reason, earlier
this year, Wimbledon authorities announced to give equal prize money to both
men’s and women’s winners in the competition, a decision which was applauded by
all quarters.
