Frances Tiafoe has successfully secured his place in the second round of the
US Open after he defeated his compatriot Learner Tien in straight sets on the main court at Flushing Meadows.
World No. 10 Tiafoe soared through his opening match at the New York major, winning the match against wild card Tien 6-2, 7-5, 6-1. The American was playing on the main court at Arthur Ashe Stadium, meaning all eyes were on him.
Tiafoe, who reached the semi-finals at last year's New York major, did not disappoint as he delivered a clean and straightforward win against his fellow home player.
Stunning win outweighs frustrating moments
Although the win was a convincing one, there were a few frustrating moments for Tiafoe during the match. The 25-year-old broke his opponent in the very first game, setting the tone for his overall dominance of the round.
Throughout the first set, Tiafoe was an imposing force at the net who frequently forced his opponent to retreat, helping him to win the set comfortably.
After breaking his opponent twice in the first set, Tiafoe won another break early on in the second and looked to be on track to take the set with ease again, but he was met with more resistance from Tien this time around.
Tiafoe went on to struggle slightly, losing the next two games on unforced errors. Although he won points back, Tien managed to break Tiafoe toward the end of the set and was close to taking a 6-5 lead before the tenth seed survived another deuce for another break and successfully secured the set.
Tiafoe went on to soar through the final set, winning it 6-1.
At just 17 years old, Tien was the youngest player in the US Open this year, having only turned pro last month.
Tiafoe will go on to face Sebastien Ofner in the next round.
