Aryna Sabalenka is two victories away at
Wimbledon from dethroning
Iga Swiatek as world No. 1.
Current world No. 2 Sabalenka has had a successful run at the SW19 so far. The Belarusian defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova in the round of 16 in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. Over the course of the tournament, she has also prevailed over Anna Blinkova, Varvara Gracheva and Panna Udvardy, with powerful shots that prove her place as the major's second seed.
However, she now not only has the chance to lift the Wimbledon trophy, but also overtake Swiatek as world No. 1, a position that the pole has held since a 32 weeks so far.
Swiatek out of Wimbledon
Swiatek started out strong at the tournament, but ultimately lost against Ukraine's Elina Svitolina in the quarter final. It was the first time that the 22-year-old had made it past the fourth round of the grasscourt major, but unfortunately her good run did not continue for long afterwards.
This means that as long as Sabalenka reaches the Wimbledon final, even if she does not win, she will take over the number one spot in the
WTA world rankings. The 25-year-old has already had the chance to overtake Swiatek once this year at the
French Open, but Swiatek's ultimate victory there meant she kept hold of top spot.
Sabalenka will face Madison Keys in her quarter-final match today, Wednesday July 12.
