Andy
Roddick jokingly suggested that
Wimbledon officials should not let Roger
Federer enter the All-England Club.
Federer
arrived at the 2023 Wimbledon as one of the biggest stars, although this time
he was not competing on the court but attended as a club member to watch Andy
Murray's victory over Ryan Peniston in a 6-3, 6-0, 6-1 match. The 20-time Grand
Slam champion was seated in the Royal Box alongside the Princess of Wales,
observing the match.
Federer is
one of the most recognizable figures, perhaps the ultimate figure, in the world
of tennis. However, in the past, he has had difficulties entering the All
England Club as officials did not recognize the 8-time Wimbledon champion and
he did not have the required credential.
"I was
like, 'I'm just asking you again where can I get in,' and she said, 'The other
side, but you have to be a member.' I look at her one last time and I'm so
sorry, I couldn't believe and still can't believe I said this and because I
still feel bad about it. I'd look at her and say, 'I have won this tournament
eight times. Please, believe me, I am a member!'" Federer said.
"I got
back in the car. My coach is like, 'Oh good, where do we get in?' and I'm like,
'Don't talk. Let's go up and around the gate'. So, then I go out and I go around
on the other side," he added.
The tennis
legend recalled the anecdote and arrived with two identification cards to
prevent a similar situation from happening again. He even posted a photograph
of himself holding two identification cards as a humorous response to the
incident:
"I
remembered it this time."
Andy
Roddick, the former world No. 1 who lost four Grand Slam finals to Federer,
three of them at Wimbledon, responded to the Swiss player's photo with a
playful comment:
"I
still say they shouldn’t let you in," Roddick wrote.
